Empowering differently-abled people
Noida, January 12, 2008: ‘Affirmative Action’—the social outreach arm of The NIIT Institute (TNI), on its way to accomplish its aim to increase the literacy level of the mass and heighten their socio-economic state, has taken another concrete step to reach the differently-abled members of our society—the hearing impaired.
As part of this initiative, NIIT joined hands with Noida Deaf Society (NDS) in 2006 and created a program on Visual Design, Graphics and Desktop Publishing for the hearing impaired, so that their abilities can be better leveraged to enable them gain a skill of higher value. This initiative would help them be better employed and find the necessary recognition in the society.
NIIT launched a one year program in October 2006, with Corel Draw, Adobe Photoshop, Using flash, and Adobe Indesign as its contents. Eighteen students of NDS were enrolled in the 1st batch.
The 1st batch of students successfully completed the course in December 2007 and was awarded NIIT Certificate in Graphics, Design and Desktop Publishing by Mr. P. Rajendran, COO, NIIT, here today.
In the last one year, Instructors from NIIT participated voluntarily to train these students. NIIT Instructors had a completely novel experience while training these special students who were found to be equally competent as other students, as far as intelligence was concerned. The students’ visual ability and graphic design capability were pleasantly surprising.
Taking the association forward, NIIT will start the training program for next batch of NDS students in January 2008.
Noida Deaf Society (N.D.S) was established on the 13th of June 2005 with the sole purpose of betterment of the Deaf people in and around Noida by Ruma Roka. Ruma is trained as a sign language interpreter at the NIHH (National Institute of hearing handicapped). The society is a non profit organization and runs on private funding at the moment. At present it operates from 469 Sector 29 Noida.

- Basic Computer Literacy–MS Office, Internet Browsing and Typing speed. This course aims at making the deaf able to work in an office environment. It provides classes for basic and intermediate computer skills conducted by a certified deaf teacher.
- The society has a DTP course for teaching advanced level of computer skills such as Adobe Photoshop, In Design and Corel Draw to enable the Deaf students take up better opportunities in the IT market. This is being run by instructors from NIIT.
