Testing FormatThe TOEIC test is a paper-and-pencil, multiple-choice assessment that uses audiocassettes, pictures, and written materials to evaluate English-language skills.
Test ContentThe TOEIC test is a paper-and-pencil, multiple-choice assessment. There are two separately timed sections of 100 questions each.
Section I: ListeningExaminees listen to a variety of questions and short conversations recorded in English, then answer questions based on what they heard.
Part 1: Photographs (20 items)
Part 2: Question - Response (30 items)
Part 3: Short Conversations (30 items) Part 4: Short Talks (20 items)
Section II: ReadingExaminees read a variety of materials and respond at their own pace to questions based on the content.
Part 5: Incomplete Sentences (40 items)
Part 6: Error Recognition (20 items) Part 7: Reading Comprehension (40 items)
Test LengthThe test lasts approximately 2 ½ hours. Examinees have:
45 minutes for Section I
75 minutes for Section II, and
the remaining time to respond to biographical questions and a brief questionnaire about education and work history.
FeesIn India the TOEIC test is available for Rs. 2495 per test to individual test takers For institutional use by language schools, government agencies, and corporations administering the test to internal test takers, the price will be offered upon request.
ScoresTest Scoring on the TOEIC test are determined by the number of correct answers. The number of correct responses on each section is converted to a scale score.
Score DescriptorsThe TOEIC Listening and Reading Score Descriptors (PDF) provide additional information for understanding a test taker’s strengths and weaknesses and for identifying areas that need improvement. The TOEIC Can-Do Guide (PDF) may help you interpret TOEIC scores within specific contexts.
Score UsageScores are used to measure how well test takers might do in real-life situations where they're required to speak English.
Score ValidityEnglish language skills can improve or decline over time. For that reason, TOEIC scores are valid (and kept on file at ETS) for two years.
Understanding ScoresScore reports are in an easy-to-understand format. Additionally, TOEIC Service International has a publication that may help organizations interpret TOEIC scores within specific contexts that are available – TOEIC Can-Do Guide (PDF)
Score ReportingWhen taken on-site at organizations and language schools, a local TOEIC preferred vendor scores the test. Results are reported to the organization or school in a Score Roster.
